Native Fish In the Classroom

Native Fish in the Classroom is a classroom-based, environmental stewardship program offered to teachers in grades 6-12 designed to assist students in developing an attitude of stewardship toward Louisiana's natural resources. This is accomplished primarily through raising native Louisiana fish species (Paddlefish and/or Largemouth Bass) in the classroom from eggs to fingerlings (juvenile fish) which the students will then release into a pre-approved riverine habitat towards the end of the school year.

Participating teachers in this program must use this portal to submit teaching hours electronically.

If you are interested in applying to become a Native Fish in the Classroom teacher or want more information on the program, please contact Lindsay Seely at lseely@wlf.la.gov or 225-765-2375.

Aquatic Ed Activity Guide

LDWF provides free, standards‑aligned aquatic education activity guides for use in classroom and informal education programs. You can download each guide using the links below.

Educators using the Activity Guides are asked to report the number of hours spent teaching with these materials by signing up for the appropriate opportunity and submitting time after each use. These reported hours help LDWF secure federal funding to continue offering the guides and other aquatic education opportunities at no cost.

Fishing for Fun (K-3rd grade) - A playful/engaging introduction to the world of fishing. Students explore values such as respect and safety, and they learn about the food chain and fishing tips.

Finnie the Fingerling (K-6th grade) - Students learn about Booker Fowler, the largest fish hatchery in Louisiana, along with info on fish life cycles, habitat, and fish id.

Let’s Go Fishing (4th-6th grade) - An interactive book with activities and student-guided research on fish adaptations, anatomy, food webs, invasive species, habitat, fish id, and fish spawning.
